Built from the other side of the rope.

Why we built it

I spent more than seven years in UK nightlife and live music, and on tour across Europe. I know how much work goes into a night before the first guest walks through the door.

I watched the most important nights get written up days later, from memory. The people who were there knew what happened, but the record didn’t always show it.

Martyn’s Law asks the most of venues with the least time and money to spare. So I built the tool I wished they’d had: one place to keep the record as it happens, see the gaps and prepare the evidence.

Named for a reason

Martyn’s Law is named after Martyn Hett, one of the 22 people killed in the Manchester Arena attack in 2017. The law exists because of the campaign led by his mother, Figen Murray. We recognise that history with respect; this is not a claim of endorsement of Vigil.

What we believe

The record comes first.

Make the record at the time, keep it signed and tamper-evident, and make it available when someone asks.

People decide, not software.

The system shows the information and flags the gaps. Staff make the decisions.

Hold only what you must.

Consent, retention and access belong in the product, not in a policy nobody opens.

Built for the small venue.

Useful to one duty manager and a small door team, without a consultant or a control room.

Honest about what we are.

Vigil prepares records and scores readiness. It does not certify compliance or carry a regulator’s endorsement.

Everyone gets out.

Plan for people who need help, with a route, a steward and a refuge. Keep those plans current.
